General info

Toronto, Canada

I was born in the US but my family moved around a lot when I was younger and we eventually ended up in Toronto, where I currently reside. I studied at OCAD University in Toronto where I went through their interdisciplinary program. My work is created using both traditional and digital methods - ink, graphite and photoshop. To me art is a multi-faceted thing and I'm currently involved in a number of creative pursuits which include tee-shirt design, screenwriting, graphic novels and children's book illustration.

I currently have twelve designs printed at threadless.com as well as prints at shirt.woot, tilteed, designbyhumans, humantouchtees and anticlothes. Some of my other clients: Urban Outfitters, The Gap, Threadless, Amazon, Protest The Hero, Cartoon Bar Fight, Citizen Science Quarterly, LIFT, Urban Trends Trading BV, pelle pelle, Design Milk, Art Pickings, Art House Shop, Gawker Artists, Blik Surface Graphics, The Land of Nod.

On Threadless and various other sites I usually go by the user name "igo2cairo".

See below for a link to my Society6 gallery where my artwork can be purchased as archival prints, framed prints, canvas prints, stationary cards, iPhone/laptop skins and iPhone cases.

Experience

    May 2007 - Present
    Threadless

Threadless is a wonderful place that has allowed me to expand my skill-set as an artist and has provided me with a forum to display my work and get valuable feed-back. It's also a supportive community where I have made many good friends with fellow artists from around the world. My user name on Threadless is "igo2cairo".

I'm a proud member of the Threadless Alumni Club and currently have twelve prints, including my Select design "Journey to the West".

  • screenplay writer
8899 Beverly Blvd. Los Angeles USA
    The Chasin Agency

I've co-written three screenplays with my two brothers, Eric and Devin Fan and we have in turn co-written a science fiction screenplay entitled "Unknown" with the noted screenplay writer Dan O'Bannon ("Alien", "Total Recall").

It was pitched to some major Hollywood studios and producers, including Joel Silver and Kennedy and Marshall (affiliated with Dreamworks). Both expressed a lot of interest and it went into a second reading as well as a meeting at Kennedy and Marshall.

During this time our literary agent was Scott Penney. He's now retired and we're currently seeking new representation for our latest project.

Education

  • General Studies
    100 McCaul St. Toronto, Canada
    OCAD

The Ontario College of Art & Design has more depth and breadth in visual arts and design programs than any school of its kind in Canada and offers a unique environment that combines studio-based learning with critical inquiry.

I've had a very diverse and intensive education at OCAD which has included training in illustration, design, sculpture, art history, photography and film. This has given me a lot to draw on and I'm very thankful I've had the opportunity to learn in such a vibrant and world-class institution.

Personal Projects

  • Graphic novel with Joe Carr

My two brothers, Eric and Devin Fan and I are collaborating with Joe Carr to adapt one of our science fiction screenplays into graphic novel form. He'll be doing all the artwork and my brother Eric and I will handle the colouring. Joe is an amazing artist based in Alaska who recently worked on the film "Clash of The Titans", designing a series of custom tee shirts for the special-effects crew. He also has had many of his designs printed at Threadless as both tee shirts and posters.

We're all completely stoked to have Joe on board with this project and the results are sure to be epic. Stay tuned for updates and be sure to check out Joe Carr's fantastic website at antiquatedpress.com

Functions, Events

  • HOW Design Conference

I was invited by Jake Nickell (founder of Threadless), to attend the How Conference in Denver on June 9 2010, as part of a select panel of 4-5 artists from all around the world to talk about various things like creative process, commercial art and particularly how artists get their work out there.

The title of the panel was "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb."

Please refer to the set in my portfolio entitled "HOW Design Conference" for some photos of the event. There's even a video!

  • Lightning in a Bottle Festival

A selection of my work was displayed at the "Lightning in a Bottle" festival held in June 2011.

Check out my main page for photos of the event under the heading "Publications, T.V. shows & gallery events".

  • Cartoon Bar Fight

Really stoked to announce my involvement with this wonderful and talented indie/folk-rock group, Cartoon Bar Fight. Cartoon Bar Fight was formed in 2007 by Kendall Sallay and Dirk Milotz. They had their E.P. release party on Nov. 18 at the Art Boutiki in San Jose.

They are using my design "Ocean Meets Sky" for the cover art of their first E.P entitled "Tell All The Children" and also on their website. The intro/opening track was inspired by my design "Ocean Meets Sky" and also the title of the song. It doesn't get much cooler than that! There are a bunch of photos related to this on my portfolio page under the heading "Cartoon Bar Fight".

They are selling both digital and physical copies of the E.P. on their website so check it out by just clicking the title. It has 7 tracks, including the intro inspired by "Ocean Meets Sky". The intro is a dreamy, instrumental piece that really captures the mood of the illustration.

You can listen to samples of all the tracks on their website. Their sound is warm, melodic, folk-inspired and the lead-singer, Kendall Sallay has a wonderful singing voice. No doubt this band will be going places so I'm glad I could catch them on the way up. :)

    Congrats Cartoon Bar Fight!

Awards

  • Select design on Threadless

I was deeply honoured to be invited by Threadless to work on a "Select" design which I've entitled "Journey to the West".

This design is a metaphor for the journey my dad took to the west from Taiwan when he was a young man, leaving behind his family and culture to pursue a dream. In a larger sense it represents the journey we all take in life, choosing different paths that lead us to sometimes unexpected places.
