BASIC FUNCTION Under the general direction of the Director of Purchasing and/or Graphic Production Manager; coordinates, and performs a wide variety of design professional duties involved in the creation and design of digital artwork; communicates with clients to plan and create artwork according to the final desired goal; performs other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience, education and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical combination would be the following:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in fine arts, graphic design, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE: Four years of professional experience in graphic design and production.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Principles, materials, techniques, and elements of digital art design;
  • Adobe Creative Suite; Macintosh computers; Wacom tablet;
  • Principles, methods, and techniques of printing digital formats, and graphic arts;
  • Procedures, methods, and techniques of graphic development and phototypesetting;
  • Design elements such as aesthetics, typography, compositions, color theory, value, balance, line, and space;
  • Methods and materials utilized in digitizing, manipulating, and enhancing images;
  • Various color models related to computer technology;
  • Record-keeping techniques;
  • Characterizes and uses of paper and ink used;
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary;
  • Basic math;
  • Copyright laws.

ABILITY TO:

  • Operates a variety of office equipment including a computer and assigned software;
  • Provide graphic art services utilizing desktop publishing and a wide variety of other graphic design methods and materials;
  • Maintain current knowledge of advances in the digital design field;
  • Interpret the ideas of others by the imaginative development of appropriate illustrations;
  • Coordinate, design, and produce printed material from concept;
  • Calculate size of reduction or enlargement for artwork;
  • Maintain computerized records related to work performed;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others;
  • Meet schedules and timelines;
  • Maintain high productivity and accuracy in fast-paced, team driven environment;

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Employees in this classification sit, use fingers, wrists, or hands repetitively, use both hands simultaneously, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, have depth perception, have color vision, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, see small details, use a computer, and use a telephone.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees in this classification work inside without guidance from supervisor. Employees have direct contact with other District staff, high volume of work and tight deadlines, changing priorities, continuous interruptions, and may work over 40 hours a week.

GENERAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

DESIGN DUTIES: Plans, coordinates, and performs a variety of artistic duties which involve the creation and design of digital artwork for print materials and multimedia images to meet the communication needs of schools and District; prepares illustrations or rough sketches of material, discussing them with clients or supervisors and making the necessary changes; prepares and releases artwork for printing via electronic files; proofs projects for accuracy before final printing; develops designs and layouts for product illustrations, logos, and Internet websites; operates based on knowledge of layout principles and aesthetic design concepts such as balance and composition; determines size and arrangement of illustrative material; creates and produces signs, illustrations, and other sketches by hand as needed; utilizes sharp blades and mat cutters on mat board, foam-core, and cardboard; draws and prints charts, graphs, illustrations, and other artwork, using a computer; creates three-dimensional models for publications such as directories, study guides, curriculum materials, manuals, newsletters, and brochures; selects type style and size, font type, colors, spacing of letters and text lines, placement, and size and type of photos and artwork to meet customer specifications; operates a scanner to prepare line art and photographs for printing; designs typeface and does hand and mechanical lettering; uses computer software to generate new images; designs and creates visual images for video productions and broadcasts using graphics hardware and software; cleans, maintains, and makes minor repairs to equipment as necessary; arranges for major repairs.

CUSTOMER SERVICE AND MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES: Consults with clients to discuss art design needs, goals, and target audiences; communicates with customers to plan, design, proof, and revise graphics; determine final required output from rough draft and work orders; provides support and in producing a variety of printed material such as newsletters, brochures, logos, and posters; operates a computer, assigned software, and peripheral equipment; uses computer to create art designs for client or supervisor; maintains archive of images, photos, or previous work products; receives work orders from supervisor; maintains work area in a clean, safe, and orderly manner; responds to telephone inquiries, greets and assists customers; provides assistance to staff as needed; communicates with graphic and production staff to discuss final publication of artwork; attends and participates in meetings, conferences, and seminars related to assigned activities to maintain current knowledge of advances in the field; and performs related duties as assigned.
