Reporting to the Associate Dean of Alumni Relations & Communications, the Director will develop and implement an integrated and cohesive marketing plan that raises the brand of the Columbia College Alumni Association and its programs, alumni and purpose, through clear messaging, powerful storytelling, innovative channel strategies and relevant content planning. This individual will manage a team of three on web, social, print, mobile and emerging channels to communicate in relevant and inspiring ways, strengthening the loyalty, pride and feeling of connectedness in College alumni towards Columbia College. S/he will also collaborate regularly with fundraising communications staff to coordinate messages, visual design and timing, to create a cohesive alumni experience.The Director will work closely with the Alumni Relations, Events, Columbia College Today magazine and Annual Fund teams to be informed of content and assets that must be developed, and will also build a strong partnership with the Columbia Alumni Association Communications and College Communications teams to coordinate University/College communications. The incumbent must be passionate about alumni/customer-driven communications. He/she will continuously leverage data and insights to create intelligent segmentation strategies, elevated messaging objectives, a consistent brand, and impactful design and formats, all grounded in industry best practices and the changing landscape of digital marketing.The Director will drive coordination across channels and teams to make communications more effective, partner with communications experts (freelancers or other) to drive high quality, innovative materials in a cost effective manner, and develop a more structured and disciplined test and learn plan to provide analytics and learning to improve communications over time.


The Director will specifically own the Columbia College Alumni website and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.) channels, thinking carefully about user experience and strategic content. In addition to helping to transform the long-term design and user experience of these two key channels, the Director will develop a rich and dynamic content plan that incorporates video, graphic design, illustration, photography and written content, with clear tie-ins to the Columbia experience and the value of connecting back to the community and institution. The Director will partner with external vendors and the internal technologies team (on short-term enhancements and long-term needs) to ensure that the capabilities and tools used reflect ways that our alumni communicate. S/he will also partner with University office on technology, content and timing as they communicate electronically with alumni and parents. The Director will manage the team's day-to-day development of direct marketing and communications assets, including email and print materials ranging from high end gala invitations to volunteer solicitations, to driving attendance for large scale events like Reunions. He/She will partner closely with the Annual Fund team to identify opportunities to integrate fundraising messages in thoughtful ways that can maximize overall long term engagement. He/She will closely manage staff in their development of all creative work to ensure it aligns with the overall communication strategy and that priorities across teams are appropriately balanced. The Director will work closely with the Associate Dean and other key partners to build appropriate tracking and analytics, as well as a testing pipeline, so that the organization will have clear information on the opportunities to improve communications, as well as information on alumni preferences (as it relates to content, channel, etc.).

Bachelor's degree required. A minimum of six years of proven experience building and managing websites and other digital marketing tools. Demonstrated experience in partnering with both technologies and creative partners required.

Managerial/leadership experience with demonstrated ability to mentor individual team members and foster their development. Excellent personal communications skills, verbal and written required. Strong relationship builder, who can work across many lines and drive consensus. Experience in direct marketing, segmentation and campaign analytics a plus. Passionate about customer-oriented and 360 communications. Detail-oriented and commitment to flawless execution in communications required.
