We are looking for a talented Front-End Visual Developer to help C&EN's Creative team elevate our journalism through thoughtful product and editorial experience design. You'll be part of a team of designers, developers, and graphic specialists shaping design strategy, visual identity, and the user experience for C&EN's website, mobile app, and digital edition. This is a wide-ranging role that will be involved with the full spectrum of our work, including digital storytelling, data visualizations, and product enhancements and development. Through participation on our cross-functional Product team, the ideal candidate will support and innovate our storytelling and user experience through creative uses of front-end code and design acumen.

What you'll do:

  • Design, maintain, and code the look and feel of responsive pages on C&EN's website.
  • Collaborate with writers and editors to create storytelling experiences.
  • Brainstorm and pitch ideas for new storytelling or interactive treatments or product enhancements.
  • Create mockups and develop prototypes to communicate ideas or design new features.
  • Deliver improvements and optimizations to existing features.
  • Work with other designers and developers to establish and maintain style guides, standards, and design systems.
  • Be a constant advocate for an excellent user experience, identifying opportunities to improve users' experience and take initiative to recommend solutions.
  • Collaborate with developers, designers, and product leaders as they develop UX-research plans and gather business requirements, prototype new features or improvements to existing components, and develop strategies for testing new design elements.

What you'll bring:

  • 5+ years of experience designing digital products.
  • An eye for visual detail, and a drive for implementing great design through code.
  • Strong knowledge of the building blocks of modern web development: HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • Proficiency with common visual design tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch, etc).
  • Experience mocking up designs and using prototyping tools.
  • Ability to take a design from a sketch to a finished web page, including iterating and updating designs based upon user needs and stakeholder feedback.
  • Solid understanding of UX fundamentals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to describe your ideas, brainstorm with a group, and draw out feedback from colleagues.
  • A problem-solving mindset and a knack for troubleshooting.
  • Experience handling multiple projects and meeting tight production deadlines as well as flexibility for last-minute changes.
  • Experience in media, journalism, or publishing, with an emphasis on creating digital experiences that support storytelling is a big plus.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Experience Manager is a big plus. Our newsroom uses Adobe Experience Manager as its content management system.
  • Familiarity with JAVA is a plus.
