Lead User Experience Designer

The College Board is a non-profit organization dedicated to clearing a path for all students to own their future. The key educational offerings of our programs provide us with unequaled access to student data, giving us the potential to make meaningful impact in the lives of students on larger and larger scales. Our Access program, focused on the student pathway to college, is developing The Opportunity Pathway. This will bring together key touch points within our various instruction and assessment programs, and leverage our data to make this pathway as easy to tread, and unfettered as possible. We are looking for a Lead User Experience Designer to support this effort.

In this role, you will analyze end-user needs and translate the findings into usable design solutions. Your responsibilities will include: working with stakeholders to understand business requirements, and user needs; Establishing and aligning with development teams on design strategy through user flows and architecture; Developing draft-level, through spec-level design documentation; Ensuring that design work is adherent to brand standards; Presenting ideas and concepts to internal 'clients' and project stakeholders; Working with our Design Research group, and conducting user research to properly test all design concepts with users, and improve usability of products in your purview, as per research findings.

You are a maker, and a doer. You have a mastery of graphic design and web technologies, as you will be in charge of the look and feel of the applications and web properties that you work on. You also are familiar and practiced with user research methods: you maintain an organized, data-informed sense of your end user through discovery and design. You are able to react effectively to findings from research in order to enhance usability and overall product quality. You are entrepreneurial. You can work independently, self manage, and find ways and means to support our goals. You can also take direction, if needed, and can work within a team collaboratively, if you should find yourself there. You are adaptable. You are service-oriented, but you are an advocate. Your ability to persuade stakeholders to act in favor of user-centric design decisions, and to demonstrate the impact of these decisions (from user satisfaction and business gains), will be highly valued. Experience should demonstrate creative solutions on a various range of platforms, leadership, your ability to handle complex UX problems, and drive excellent execution.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Analysis of business and technical requirements
  • Design research
  • Creation of user personas and other methodologies for defining target audience, and user needs
  • Creation of user journeys and flows to capture current and future states of user pathways
  • Design of information architecture, wireframes and compelling user interfaces
  • Generation of comprehensive, consistent and usable UI solutions to help users meet their needs
  • Development of interaction prototypes, specifications and other design documents to communicate design ideas to project teams
  • Forming and maintaining solid relationships with project team members and stakeholders
  • Lead user testing and stakeholder reviews to validate the efficacy of these solutions
  • Translate research findings into tangible designs
  • Coordinate with project management and design team to ensure timely delivery of design artifacts
  • A significant contribution to, and the fostering of our design process and quality standards based on objective, data-driven evidence
  • Foster a collaborative and learning environment by partnering with stakeholders and facilitating design decisions to optimize for the user experience while balancing interests within technology, marketing, business, and executive partners
  • Oversee the creation of strategic materials and demos to internal and external teams
  • Familiarity with front-end coding technologies and data modeling is a big plus

Requirements

Education/Experience

  • BA in a related field (computer science, interaction design, HCI, industrial design, information
  • science, social sciences, graphic design, etc.) and/or equivalent years of successful work
  • experience
  • 3+ years of professional experience as an Information Architect, User Experience Architect, or Interaction Designer
  • Documented experience in designing for large content rich websites, and applications, proven solutions that met users' needs
  • Related Skills & Other Requirements
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to demonstrate both leadership, and understanding with respect to project partners
  • Solution-oriented approach to design: the ability to take into account both quality standards-a striving for excellence, as well as the real-world constraints of a project
  • A clear ability to forgo personal biases, and to delegate responsibilities to the most qualified partners in order to arrive at the 'best' solution possible
  • Extensive experience in information design and user scenarios
  • Broad knowledge of digital interaction design patterns, Web site architecture, user interfaces and navigation on various platforms (Web, mobile, tablet)
  • Familiarity with user-centered research, such as usability testing, contextual inquiry, and field interviews
  • Understanding of the physical, cognitive, cultural and social factors that affect design decisions.
  • Familiarity with technical issues around web development and ability to work constructively with development teams, including but not limited to understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery
  • Strong interest in and aptitude for learning new technologies and design skills
  • Fluency in industry standard design and prototyping tools
  • A solid understanding of web and mobile design principles and best use of current web and mobile technologies and scalable dynamic user interfaces
