HILDEBRAND

INDY NATIONAL GUARD DRIVER
I was asked to shoot an Ad Campaign for National Guard with their driver
JR Hildebrand, who had just started racing for Panther Racing (the team
sponsored by National Guard). This was the day before the famous Indy 500
Race and the first for JR. Jumping forward to the next day, he was in the lead
by 10 car lengths and had the last corner to handle and he would WIN the Indy
500 as a rookie, plus the FIRST win for his team Panther Racing. But instead of
winning, he hit the wall on the last bend and limped across the finish line on three
wheels. The worst part? He crossed the line in 2nd PLACE, as the car behind
overtook him on the finish line...what a way to lose the biggest race of your life.

UNICEF

INDIA
Shooting with UNICEF is something that I always love to do. I had the opportunity
to shoot in one of their camps in India, where they take in children until they are
old enough to go out and work and support themselves. It's heartbreaking to
hear some of the stories of the kids while I was there. I met a 5-year-old boy
who was sold by his parents to a powerful, well-to-do family. When the boy ate
a biscuit from the master's son's plate (which he didn't finish one night before
bedtime) they decided to scold him with a red hot poker to teach him a lesson.
The pictures I shot of this poor boy's injury's are too graphic to show. Due to the
fantastic work of UNICEF, this boy was rescued by the camp and is now safe,
happy and learning skills to help him better himself in the future. This was an
amazing shoot to be involved in but very very sad to hear what these kids (and I
mean kids - many of them were under the age of 10) go through on a day-to-day
basis in this country. Keep up the good work UNICEF - looking forward to future
projects working with this inspiring organization.

PAUL SIMON

GRACELAND'S TOUR SOUTH AFRICA
Where are they now? I had the great pleasure of being the tour photographer
Where in the world are they now? I had the great pleasure of being the tour
photographer for Paul Simon on his Graceland's Tour back in the late 80's.
What a trip that was! We had guards outside our hotel rooms every night for
protection, as well as guards with me in the pit at the front of the stage. If
anyone tried to climb over the barriers the guards would hit them with rubber
hoses. I remember I went shopping in a local store one day, and my two
guards said, 'Wait here, you are being followed.' I had no idea what they were
talking about, but apparently there were two guys following me. My guards
said they would have mugged me if they hadn't have been with me...never did
she those two potential muggers again after that, so not sure what the guards
did to them. After the tour was done, Paul Simon paid for a private trip for
everyone to travel down the Zambezi River to Livingstone's Island...great
memories, great trip.

KEVIN DILLON

HOLLYWOOD, CA
This was a fun day…we basically ran all over Hollywood shooting Kevin.
We took this shot at my friends house in the Hollywood hills at the start of
the day, as it had a phenomenal pool and backdrop overlooking the city. We
got a great set of pictures out of this day with him. He was up for everything
we threw at him - no matter what it was...super genuine guy.

KATIE PRICE

MALIBU, CA
In London there are well known reality starts (on par with the Heidi and
Spencer's of the world) and no one was bigger at that time, than Katie
Price. She had her own show in London called Kate and Pete (Pete being
her now ex-husband we shot this with). Katie came to the US to shoot an
episode for her show, and asked me if i would shoot her for the UK magazine
market while she was here. We had some fun and came up with this images
as we were playing around with different shots.

HAIR CAMPAIGN

STUDIO
Hair campaign I shot for my good friend Laurent D. The idea was to come up with
something different and unique that hadn't been done before, so I asked the stylist
to make the hair like a bird's nest so it didn't show the model's face - just her long
neck. We then strategically lit her and the hair, and this was the striking end result.

Fashion shoot in conjunction with Ralph Lauren at a studio in LA. The studio
was at the top floor of a building so we had to put the horse in the elevator to
get him to the studio that way. As soon as he exited the elevator, he decided
to do a huge pee that went everywhere. The assistants were running around
frantically trying to clean up the mess so we could start shooting... fun day and
NO animals OR people were hurt during the shoot!

TIBETAN WEDDING

CHINA
This was a traditional Tibetan wedding that I happened to crash when I was
in China. I was in my hotel room and heard a lot of noise downstairs so naturally
I picked up my cameras and went to investigate. When I got to the reception of the
hotel, I saw the Tibetan wedding reception taking place in one of the large rooms,
so went in and started shooting pictures discreetly from my hip, paparazzi style.
After about 10 minutes no one had stopped me so I carried on shooting, and got an
amazing set of pictures, which i ended up giving to the couple before the end of the
night. I have no idea where they are now, but it's nice to think they have a great set
of pictures from their special day.

NELSON MANDELA

PRESIDENTIAL PALACE
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
We arrived early in the morning at Mandela's Presidential Palace in Cape Town.
At the gate, my assistants and I had to exit the van filled with lightening equipment,
cameras and everything else you could imagine so that the guards could go inside
the van and search ever inch for explosives and weapons - a necessary security
precaution. Once inside the Palace, I was introduced to Mandela in his favorite room
- The Elephant Room. He would start his day there every morning and go through his
busy schedule for the day. It's not easy running a country! He was very humble and
offered me a cup of tea, which I graciously accepted. After all, it doesn't happen too
many times that you get invited for tea by the President of a country! We were running
around frantically setting up lights in six different locations throughout the palace so I
could get a variety of shots. At 11AM on the dot, Mandela proceeded down the stairs to come for his sitting with me. The minute we threw the switch
to turn the lighting on, we blew the power through the whole palace. That immediately changed my planned shots, and had to revert to finding new locations
with natural light throughout the whole compound. In the end, I got some of the most memorable and beautiful shots in my career, so it all worked out fine!

TINA TURNER

SOUTH OF FRANCE
Roger Davis, Tina's long-time manager, called me up asking if I could do an international shoot
to get worldwide publicity for Tina's comeback world tour. Of course, the opportunity to shoot
a legendary singer was something I couldn't turn down. We spent two days at her stunning
estate in the south of France and shot hundreds of beautiful images. The image of her in the
water was one of the most challenging to get (as Tina is very afraid of water!) but the image
ended up on many covers throughout the world. It has become as iconic as she is.

VAN HALEN

LOS ANGELES, CA
Eddie Van Halen walked into the studio, nodded at David
Lee Roth as he sat having his hair and makeup done, and
carried on walking into his makeup room to get ready. This
was the first time the two had seen or spoken to each other
in 22 years, and I was on set to capture the moment. An hour
or so later, after they'd all been groomed, I went into the
wardrobe department with the band to look at all the clothes.
Eddie glanced through them all and said, "I just want to wear
what I have on," which I said was fine. David and the rest of
the band picked out their outfits and got dressed. Eddie came up to me and said, "Are you ready to go?," followed by, "I want to do a picture with David."
So I grabbed David and I shot the two of them together for the first time in 22 years. Rolling Stone ran the image that week and within 24 hours I had over
400 emails from Van Halen fans asking to see more images.

After looking throughout the whole grounds of his huge property, we ended up shooting this in

snapped the shot, and this is what we came up with.

Most famously known for his role in Dirty Dancing, Patrick was as

UNICEF

INDIA
This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Vendela, a world-
renowned supermodel in the 90s, and spokeswoman
for UNICEF following Audrey Hepburn's death, asked
me to go along with her to take pictures of the efforts
that the organization was doing for poverty-stricken
countries. We went to India and were granted access
to one of the enclosed UNICEF villages where they look
after children that have been rescued from slave camps.
They care for them in these villages until they are

educated and able to support themselves by getting a job. We spent the whole day in this camp and were lucky to meet all of the kids. They were so happy to be
safe and did not have to worry about where their next meal was coming from or if they were going to be beaten like they were every day in the slave camps. This
organization does amazing work in making the world a better place and I was honored to be able to see how much they truly do for these children.

NATIONAL GUARD

NORTH CAROLINA
This image is a great example of how I use a little creativity to get
the shot I want. I shot this for National Guard and they wanted something
different for their first year as IndyCar sponsors. We glossed the studio
floor to make it look like water and shot the car against a plain backdrop.
We then added in the helicopters in post-production. The lights coming from
the helicopters were from shots I took of planes arriving in to LAX at 10pm one
evening. They flew overhead with their landing lights on and I snapped the
shots to get the lights to add to the helicopters. Turned out nice and no one
would be the wiser! RETURN TO TOP

JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME

SOUTH AFRICA
What a shoot that was! I'll never forget it. I photographed him on a safari and the guy was
fearless. We tracked the white rhino (which can reach running speeds of up to 45mph)
and believe it or not we were on foot -- smart, I know! Van Damme got into a crocodile pit
full of (supposedly) sleeping crocodiles. He then proceeded to creep around in the pit to
find the biggest croc to be photographed with. I really thought nothing could top that, but
we then photographed him with 6 baby lion cubs in the Royal Suite of the Sun City hotel in
South Africa. The cubs decided they'd had enough of the boring shoot and decided to go
running around this huge suite pulling all of the pillows off of the sofa's and shaking them
around in their mouths like puppies with a new toy. It was an interesting few days to say
the least! RETURN TO TOP

SAMOA TATOOING CEREMONY

WESTERN SAMOA
I was in Samoa on a shoot and came across this tattoo ceremony, which the
participants graciously allowed me to take pictures of. It was incredible. There
were three pairs of hands stretching the skin tight in preparation for the artwork.
The tattooist was armed with a primitive looking stick with needles made from
individual wild boar teeth. To create the tattoo, they would place this tool upon the
skin and hit it with another wooden stick to make cuts into the skin. Dye was then
put into the cut to create the tattoo. Definitely not something you could ever get me
to do, but amazing to witness nonetheless.

CONAN O'BRIEN

NEW YORK, NY
This magazine shoot with Conan O'Brien was an interpretation of a famous Harold
Lloyd image of him hanging from a clock tower (apparently Lloyd used to do all these
stunts himself). To create the image, we built the wall and clock tower, and later
superimposed the original picture over the top so we'd have the same road and cars.
Unlike the original, Conan was harnessed through his pants and up around his private
parts, so we had to be in quick. I'll never forget this one, even though I think I shot it in
less than six minutes!
