Media Matters for America- a progressive nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media - seeks a Digital Design Associate to help carry out its mission as a member of the Digital Department. This is an entry-level position and is based in our Washington, D.C. office. Applicants must be prepared to relocate if they do not live within commuting distance of downtown D.C.

Role Summary:

Digital Design Associate atMedia Matters for Americais responsible for designing original graphics, illustrations, and charts. S/he works directly with the Design Manager and other members of the Digital Team to create digital content and elevateMedia Matters'research.

Reporting Structure:

  • Reports To: The Digital Design Associate reports to the Design Manager.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Graphics/Illustrations: The Digital Design Associate works with the Design Manager to create original graphics and illustrations to accompanyMedia Matters'content. S/he helps to create effective content for distribution inMedia Matters' website, social media spaces, and other platforms.

  • Charts: The Digital Design Associate creates charts for research counting projects, in order to present data in a more digestible format for the website and social media audience.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Tumblr: Assists the Digital Department in posting toMediaMatters' Tumblr page, in accordance withMediaMatters' overall social media strategy.

  • Video: Assist Design Manager with creation of graphics for video.

  • Ads: Assist Design Manager with designs for print and web ads.

  • Website Redesign: Assist Design Manager with tasks related to our website redesign.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field; or equivalent professional experience.

  • Graphic design knowledge and experience

    • Ability to create compelling illustrations, charts, etc.

    • Experience creating content for online and print spaces

    • Strong illustration skills, both representative and conceptual

    • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite

  • Understanding of U.S. media and how conservative misinformation affects our public debate.

  • Multi-tasker with a keen attention to detail and the ability to prioritize.

  • Strong Communication Skills:

    • Powerful storyteller who can break complex ideas down into digestible and effective social media content.

    • Ability to identify and empathize with a variety of audiences, including those on mobile-facing social networks, and outside of D.C.

    • Skilled at relaying information accurately and without error.

  • Work Culture:

    • Self-starter who can excel both independently and in a team setting.

    • Can execute duties in a timely manner and quickly adapt to new challenges in a fast-paced media environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Illustration experience

  • Experience with social media execution, either for personal or professional purposes.
