Senior Product Designer, Publishing (Design Systems)

We are looking for a talented Senior Product Designer to join our team. We believe the ideal browser-based interface for enabling creative collaboration in reporting, conceiving, editing, planning, programming and publishing content of the future doesn't yet exist. The ideal candidate will have a passion for understanding the needs of users, experience in systems thinking, an eye for usability, and an awareness of how improving our tools can make it easier to produce world-class journalism.

In 2019, you will work to improve and, in some cases, reimagine the user experience and design of Scoop, our content management system that The New York Times uses to publish and our mobile apps. Your will report to a Lead Product Designer who, alongside their product, technology and editorial partners, will create a strategy and vision for a cohesive user experience across our publishing tools.

Here's what you'll do in this role

1. Assemble and help drive a new design system for our suite of publishing tools used at The Times

  • Initially, begin work on an organic approach to improving and unifying our UI elements across all publishing tools, drawing from existing elements and improving upon them, to set a new standard for usability in our newsroom
  • Over time, collaborate with team leads to plan and execute a more codified system of reusable components
  • Work with engineering to ensure implementation and upkeep of the new system, documenting standards and resolving conflicts, so that our tools are as easy to design and build as they are to use
  • Conduct research, both qualitative and quantitative to inform cross-tool initiatives such as redesigning our navigation

2. Evolve and improve the writing and editing experiences for Times journalists

  • Design new flows and improve existing ones for our publishing tools, including planning, writing, and publishing email newsletters and news alert push notifications
  • Deliver engineering-ready, visually and typographically coherent design that is usable and consistent with The Times's look and feel
  • Work with engineers to perform VQA for your own design work and be accountable for the visual quality of the team's work overall
  • Contribute to requirements and translate them into a design approach, working in collaboration with product and engineering
  • Conduct usability tests of your work with our users, the journalists who rely on them
  • Interview stakeholders to inform requirements for new features
  • Present findings to team leads and achieve alignment

3. Contribute to the overall design and design culture at The Times

  • Communicate openly in crit sessions and throughout the design process, both by sharing work in progress and by giving thoughtful feedback
  • Research new patterns and technologies and experiment with new tools to keep improving our craft
  • Share inspiration and participate in charrettes, brainstorms, and other activities to build our design culture
  • As a senior designer, mentor and support mid-level designers on Publishing in areas of your expertise


  • Minimum of 4 years of design experience, working on experiences that span different devices and screen sizes
  • Experience designing information architecture systems and tools
  • Understanding for how qualitative research and data inform product and design decisions
  • Strong visual and typographic sensibility
  • Belief that product and design decisions are inextricably linked
  • A great listener who loves giving and receiving honest, thoughtful feedback
  • Steadfast in defense of both the user experience and the editorial brand while also contributing to solutions that drive our subscription and advertising business forward
  • Able to communicate design effectively, regardless of the audience
  • Enjoy working on a cross-discipline team alongside newsroom editors, engineers, product managers and other designers
  • Enjoy shipping small, quick experiments to explore or validate your ideas
  • Able to provide samples of work that show complex and creative UX solutions, extraordinary visual design and solid information architecture
  • Fluency with HTML and CSS; working knowledge of JavaScript; experience working with engineers to understand technical constraints and opportunities
  • Enthusiasm for The New York Times
